The CFL Charitable Trust has awarded funding to five people this year to assist with progress in their chosen fields.

Amy Guest (pictured above) from SAERI is going to be pursuing her love of diving and honing her skills at Viewpoint Diving in Cornwall as she continues her professional development as a scientific and commercial diver on return to the Falklands.

Amy has already proved to be a valuable member of the Shallow Marine Survey Group (SMSG) and with the development of CFL’s Diving Services her new skills will be a valuable addition to the team.

In a more academic vein Torin Harte received funding for tuition and flights as he sets off on a two year Master of Economics degree at Montash University in Melbourne, predominantly funded by the Community Development Scheme (CDS).

Derycka Reid, who is a familiar voice on Falklands Radio, was awarded funds to supplement her CDS funding for a Humanities and Social Sciences Access to Higher Education Course Level 3 Diploma. This will provide the foundation Derycka needs to progress into a journalism degree.

Oliver Thompson, who also graces Falklands airwaves as a Broadcast Journalist, is pursuing a Diploma in Business Management Level 3 as a distance learning course which will be a valuable tool in developing his Warrah Media agency which is already active in the Islands.

Conditional funding was also made available to Sasha Williams to assist with her plan to undertake a Masters in Digital Marketing.

The Trustees of The CFL Charitable Trust wish all the successful applicants the best of luck in their endeavours and look forward to hearing of their progress throughout their courses and into the future.

CFL General Manager Janet Robertson said that year on year the Trust was attracting more applications from a wide variety of applicants.

“The bar was set pretty high this year and there were inevitably some applications that had to be turned down. There were some difficult decisions for the Trustees, but I feel we have again succeeded in directing funding to areas which will benefit the community in the long term.”
