Three years after the concept was introduced by Beauchene Fishing to FIG, work has started on the £1.5 million Cape Pembroke Lighthouse renovation.
The project is jointly funded by Beauchene Fishing Company, Consolidated Fisheries Ltd (CFL ) and the Falkland Islands Government (FIG) working in collaboration with the Museum and National Trust.
With the arrival of four of the nine lighthouse specialists on Saturday 4th January, work began in earnest on Monday morning to ensure the Lighthouse will be standing tall for future generations.
Work had been carried out by local contractors in preparation for the arrival of the specialist workers from ICC Commonwealth who are recognised as industry leaders and have carried out extensive surveys of the Cape Pembroke Lighthouse on previous visits.
Former Government Archivist, the late Jane Cameron, was passionate about the preservation of the Lighthouse and efforts to raise funds and maintain the local landmark have been ongoing since the 1990s, when extensive work was carried out by Rob Yssel.
However, it was apparent that 30 years on, a total facelift was needed, and Beauchene Fishing Company’s Managing Director Cheryl Roberts took up the challenge to secure sufficient funding to preserve the historic Lighthouse for future generations.
With FIG committed to the project, CFL got backing from its board of directors and signed up to equal funding ensuring the project could be completed.
CFL’s General Manager, Janet Robertson, said she was proud CFL would be part of such an historic project. “The Lighthouse is a treasured landmark and has played a vital part in maritime history which is key to our heritage.”
Cheryl said that the Cape Pembroke Lighthouse had always been close to her heart. “From the beginning, my goal has been to make it a project for the people—dedicated to restoring and preserving this iconic Falklands landmark for future generations. It will be a place to visit, a source of pride, and a lasting tribute to the heritage our ancestors created for everyone’s benefit.”
The access road, funded by FIG, was put down in April this year by Peaks haulage Ltd and other local contractors including Richard Short, Paul Ellis and Jamel Adeoye will work alongside ICC Commonwealth on the project which is expected to span two summers.
